Is yoga worth it? Are there any benefits? You betcha!

Do you think yoga is some far out, new age mystical nonsense with no real value for your everyday life? Maybe it’s just for someone else. Is your life too hectic, too busy, too stressed to take time out for something unless it’ll provide you with some real-world benefits?

You’ll be thrilled to know that yoga is tremendously beneficial in a variety of ways. These benefits range from practical to personal to spiritual. There’s something for everyone. Here are just a few reasons to begin practicing yoga.

Lose weight through yoga. Yes, you read that right. Obesity is a growing problem in the United States and around the world. Many countries are facing overwhelming medical challenges based on people’s more sedentary lifestyles. The good news is that yoga encourages physical activity, body consciousness (in a good way) and facilitates healthy eating habits. By helping students gain a bit more respect, even reverence, for their food, yoga actually can help you gain control of your eating habits, making them an act of self-nurture that help you lose the weight.

Improve health through yoga. There are many types of yoga suitable for beginning students all the way through to advanced practitioners. Each type promotes physical health by working the body and helping students develop strength, flexibility, balance and muscle control. The asanas (or postures) are a perfect tool for developing these skills. Add in the breathing exercises and you have a total body workout.

Relieve stress through yoga. It’s probably fair to assume most of you are experiencing at least some stress in your lives. Yoga is an excellent vehicle for helping relieve that stress and tension. Yoga won’t be able to alter the situation that is causing your stress, but it won’t have to. Through yoga, you’ll develop the skills needed to stop, turn off the noise in your life and focus on developing an inner peace. Being able to control how you react to stress is a powerful yoga benefit.

Spiritual growth through yoga. As you learn and grow while practicing yoga, you’ll begin to enjoy its more spiritual and philosophical aspects. Yoga is a way of life. It involves the physical, the mental and the spiritual. Yoga combines all these things to help you develop enlightenment. This isn’t far-out, whacky mumbo jumbo. This is simply about finding an inner peace and harmony to help you become whole and well.

So, the answer is YES, yoga is definitely worth it.
