Types of Yoga Mats

Do you have to have a yoga mat to be successful at practicing this wonderful art?

No. But you might find it quite useful to have yoga mats available in certain circumstances. If you’re in a private setting with a soft carpeted floor, they’re really not an absolute necessity. But if you attend classes in a studio or gym with hardwood floors, you’ll either need to have one of your own or borrow one from the yoga teachers.

Do you intend to get serious about yoga? If so, it’s probably best to purchase a mat. But what criteria to use when selecting one? Yoga mats come in a variety of types. You can use pleasing colors or pattern selections to say something about yourself or your tastes. You can find more subdued mats, if that’s your preference. Most importantly, functional issues like texture and grip or thickness may determine your mat choice.

Honestly, unless you practice a specialized sort of yoga, most yoga mats will get the job done quite nicely. Since there are so many yoga types, if you’re a beginner you may feel a bit overwhelmed at the thought of picking the ‘right’ yoga mat. Keep in mind that many demands placed on your mat of choice will be common to several/most yoga types. Try not to be intimidated by this choice, as most mats will do just fine for your needs.

For the more advance yoga practitioners, who pursue a more rigorous form of yoga or more challenging poses, mat thickness and texture are probably of greater concern. Yoga mats that stay firmly in place are a must when assuming poses that require balance and precision.

If portability is a deciding factor, try yoga mats that are thin and easily rolled and carried. There are also sticky mats that are small and easily portable, but that still provide support during your yoga practice. You’ll still have a variety of textures, colors and patterns to choose from.

Beginners will appreciate graphic guides included with some yoga mats. These guides show proper hand and foot locations/placement for various poses. These mats will help you hold new poses safely and give you that extra bit of confidence when starting out in yoga practice.

Absorbent yoga mats are particularly well suited for certain yoga types, such as Bikram Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga. Cotton mats, with their natural absorbency, allow for the soaking up of sweat. Very important for safety while holding poses. The last thing you want is to be slipping and sliding about while trying to remain in position.

Selecting the right yoga mats for your best, most rewarding yoga experience is what it’s all about. Feel free to ask the students or yoga teachers around you for guidance. Try out different mats whenever possible to get a feel for how they might work for you. Don’t be intimidated by the variety of choices available to you. Finding the right mat for you should be a process of joy, not a burdensome task.

Yoga mats are a wonderful aid for enhancing your yoga practice. Find a great one and enjoy!
